How these reviews are made

Every review follows the same five steps: read the seller's own pages and date them, separate the seller's claims from product facts, check the claims that touch safety, health or money against official sources, describe what you actually get (including upsells and what you must supply yourself), and say who it's for, who it isn't, and what's free. The full method is on how we review.

Products we chose not to review

Some products this site could have linked to are not reviewed, on purpose:

  • A "free electricity" device plan sold on the promise that a home-built device can supply unlimited power. A device that makes more energy than it takes in conflicts with basic physics, and the seller's own page says the product "was not technically assessed". For real ways to cut energy use or keep power during an outage, see the power outage survival kit guide.
  • Herbal-remedy and wild-plant books. Their main use, treating illness with plants and identifying wild plants and mushrooms, is outside this site's scope. For health questions, talk to a doctor or pharmacist.

Most of what a household needs to get ready costs little or nothing. Start with water, a kit and a plan.
